Power flushing is the process of forcibly cleaning a central heating system using water at high velocity but very low pressure — so no physical damage is caused to your pipework or radiators. Over time, iron oxide (known as sludge), rust and dirt accumulate inside your heating system. A power flush removes this build-up and restores your system to efficient, effective operation.
Do You Need a Power Flush?
The clearest sign that your system needs a power flush is radiators that don't fully heat up — particularly cold spots at the bottom of radiators, which indicate sludge has settled. Other signs include:
- Radiators that are cold at the bottom but warm at the top
- Some radiators heating slowly or not at all
- Boiler making banging, kettling or gurgling noises
- Heating system slow to warm the house
- Discoloured water when bleeding radiators
- Higher energy bills despite similar usage
- Frequent boiler lockouts or pressure drops
A power flush is also typically recommended when a new boiler is being installed into an older system — to protect your investment and ensure the new boiler operates at maximum efficiency from day one.
The Kelly Heating NI Power Flush Process
Our power flush service uses a methodical approach to give you a thorough clean and visible evidence of the results.
Water Quality Check
We test your system water first to establish a baseline and confirm the level of contamination.
Thermal Imaging Survey
Using thermal imaging cameras, we show you exactly where the build-up is within your heating system — without removing any radiators. You can see the problem for yourself before we start.
Chemical Treatment
Strong cleaning chemicals are added to the system and left to work for approximately one week, loosening sludge, rust and deposits throughout the pipework and radiators.
Power Flush & Magnetic Clean
We return and use powerful magnets to extract all the loosened build-up from within the system, then power flush with high-velocity water to clear it completely.
Fresh Water Flush
The chemicals are flushed out with fresh water until the system runs clean.
Inhibitor & Final Test
Corrosion inhibitor is added to protect the system going forward. A final water sample test is carried out and the results shown to you — so you can see the difference.
Benefits of a Power Flush
- Improved heat circulation — radiators heat fully and evenly
- Boiler noise reduction — kettling and banging caused by sludge is eliminated
- Lower energy bills — an efficient system uses less fuel
- Extended boiler lifespan — sludge is a leading cause of premature boiler failure
- Protects your warranty — many manufacturers require a clean system for warranty validity
- Avoids costly radiator replacements — cleaning is almost always preferable to replacing
Power Flush Before a New Boiler Installation
If you're having a new boiler installed, a power flush of the existing system is strongly recommended beforehand. Fitting a new boiler into a contaminated system is one of the fastest ways to reduce its efficiency and shorten its lifespan. At Kelly Heating NI, we assess the condition of your system as part of every installation quote — and will advise honestly on whether a flush is needed. See our boiler installation page and boiler packages for more information.
Frequently Asked Questions — Power Flush Belfast
The initial visit — water quality check, thermal imaging and chemical treatment — typically takes 2–3 hours. We return approximately one week later to carry out the power flush and final clean. The second visit usually takes 3–4 hours depending on system size.
Call or WhatsApp us for current pricing. Cost depends on the number of radiators and the condition of the system. We provide a clear, upfront quote before any work begins.
Every 5–8 years is a general guideline, or sooner if you notice the signs of sludge build-up. Adding inhibitor to your system after a flush — and checking it at annual service — helps maintain cleanliness between power flushes.
The process uses very low pressure despite high velocity, so it does not physically damage pipework. However, in some very old systems with heavily corroded pipes, a power flush can reveal pinhole leaks that were already present but masked by the sludge. Kieran will advise if there's any concern about your system's condition.
